Welcome to Iowa weather!!!! Since January 6th we have had 5 snow days- 5 and one of them came the day before I was going to be gone for 4 days- however it was the lesson I was going to flip anyway. The kink in the chain was that the way I am going to flip is to watch the videos during class- than talk about it as a class- what you understand; what you don't etc.
Than, pull out small groups that need extra help and do small demos- that is how I see the flipping going- than when they are in different places I will do small discussions or use discussion questions in Schoology. However- that wasn't going to happen because I was going to be gone for 3 days- insert nervous sigh- than the snow came and then the wind blew and the temperatures were -35 below- and than we didn't have school for 2 days!!! YES!
So I put an announcement in Schoology and theyed watch the video Wednesday- they started in on their project with the sub and then I came back on Thursday- and we talked- and talked and I spent time with the students who needed help and we recapped what they learned and guess what -
IT WENT AWESOME!!!!
Great questions were asked- the kids worked as we talked if they got it- they were just as far if I had been there! It was a great feeling! An awesome feeling really!
The semester is wrapping up- wow I can't believe it! Its crazy how fast this semester flew by! I started this blog for my art room- however since switching to a weebly website I don't use it anymore- so I decided to use to to track my progress in flipping my art room. Since this week is the last week for all of my classes (they are semester not year long classes) I am mapping out how I want my new semester to look like and how I want to flip. As I was doing this one of my former students came in to for an afternoon chat- he asked me what I was doing and and told him about flipping. Of course he looked at me funny so I asked him to remember back to me demoing in class for all of the stuff we did. I asked him how many times he forgot what I did by the time I got to the end of the demo. And how many times he completely forgot the second day- his response- "Almost every time". So I said now you will have video to go back to and rewatch- and remind you want to do- you can watch it once, twice or 100 times- however many times you need to help you understand the project. His response-
"That makes sense"
Yes it does- it makes sense!!! I dipped into it a little in all of my classes, not just my digital camera class this year and the results were good- I got good feedback and and projects looked great. Now I'm going to DIVE!
How? Well I am teach 2 sections of both Drawing and Design and Drawing I/II so my first thought was to flip one and leave one- but I'm debating this...... maybe I should do both....... I am also rethinking how I teach Drawing and Design. Big projects, big unit verse smaller projects that teach the same thing- still teaching my curriculum, just differently.
So much to think about- and I'm excited to do it! I really can't wait for Jan!
My checklist-
1. Clear computer expectations- a poster that reminds them about what I expect in my classroom- too much facebook, and youtube right now- even when I walk around!
2. Update my weebly site- get it all ready for the new year or semesters!
3. Set up how I want my room to run- I don't want my students to watch videos at home- that isn't going to help- they will forget- but I don't want them to only watch the videos and jump into the assignment- something like 5 minutes video- 5 -10 of conversation and than work time- followed by exit question!
4. Weekly self evaluations- how am I going to do them- how to help them stay on task without nagging on them- because it doesn't work, they have to take ownership for their learning.

How do I want my Art Room to Look?
Week 2 reflections-
How do I want my art room to look? Culture- Climate- Daily Basis? What and how am I going to flip?
I had every intention of getting out my big paper and doing a mind map for those questions- but the mom in me took over for the week and I had about 100 things to get ready for my little one's 1st bday! So instead I thought about it all week- really every little change I got my mind floated to what I was going to do in August.
My climate and culture isn't going to change much- my room is already set up kind of crazy- lots of stuff going on- however I might have it even more free- more projects going on- see right now I have little fill ins for those who get ahead- now I'm not going to- if I flip they can move on at their own pace.
I want my classroom to be more of a conversation- in other words- alot of personal critiquing- how the students can make their art better- more creative. A flipped blooms in my class has always been the way I run my classroom, but I want more anazling and evaluating going on. Since we are one on one next year I want to do that through schoology and face to face. Some students feel more comfortable asking questions and replying threw the online network than face to face- but I don't want to lose the face to face.
I want flipped to make them THINK!!! They create all the time- but sometimes they don't appriecate the process on learn how to get there- they sometimes skip from A to C- that is my fault- I only have 50 minutes with 25 kids- sometimes its easier to map everything out for them. I want them to learn to map- I want them to figure out how to fix mistakes- not just have me tell them! I want the to experiment- I might have them focus on smaller projects rather than the BIG ones we do now. Keeps the hopping- thinking- ENGAGED!!!!
As I sit here and type I am looking at my 1 year old- exploring- she doesn't care what she gets into- everything is new and exciting and fun and she is LEARNING- I want that climate in my classroom!!! I just hope I don't have to say no as many times as I do with her!!!
Now the project I am going to flip- my self portrait unit for drawing and design- its the one they all hate at first and than love when its done- I want them to love it to begin with!

To Flip or Not to Flip that is the question!
June 17-19 I went to a great conference- FlipCon! It was awesome! I couldn't believe how many people were there and the scope of the conference. To be honest with you I just really didn't know what I was getting myself into when I signed up for the thing- but it was AMAZING!
Day 1-
The keynote was amazing- after hearing Aaron and Johnathan speak I was pumped!!! Some things I did already in two of my classrooms- but I want to do more than just demo videos! (Boring) (To reiterate the fact I didn't know what I was getting myself into- I had bought their book back in April, not realizing they were keynotes) I was pumped! I went to the rooms that intrigued me- I don't always know how different things can be worked into my room because of the art aspect. I really got something from every session! My head was full. I also went the Brian's session on having students make videos- which I am pumped about for self evaluations and having them reflect on their art work.
Day 2-
I really liked the fact Ramsey's keynote was in the middle of the day- I don't like keynotes at the end- my head gets too full and I tend to zone out. Ramsey is amazing- I had a conference where he took us through a lesson and set up a webpage with us back in April. I think of him as more of a blended classroom- maybe he isn't, but in my eyes he is. I really want my students to THINK, not just create art, but to think about it even more than they do. That day got me thinking about projects and what my room would be like- I have already started with my 2 computer centered classes- but how can I make that better- because the way I'm doing it know is BORING! I liked the fact that everyone made the point to reflect! I never teach a class the same- I reflect everyday- and flipping makes you do that!
Over the 2 days I got great ideas- there are some many things you can do in a core classes- however my room not a core class- there wasn't anyone presenting from an art room. I think its easier to flip those classes. My room already models alot of the flipped atmosphere, very open, very student centered, I don't do a lot of lecturing, so my real question is how- how to I do it in Drawing and Design, Drawing I, Clay!!! I think Ramsey's approach is going to work for me- I want the kids to dig deeper- to find their own answers- I want my classroom to truly be different next year!! Now all I have to do is figure out HOW to do that!!! I want someone from the arts to at Flipcon next year, because it can be done!!!!!
